japanese fighting fish?

I went to Japan due to a school trip, and I stayed with a host family for 1 week. And I asked so do you guys have japanese fighting fish, they had a bewildered look on their face. Than we googled it on their computer, and it says they are from thailand, yet people call them japanese fighting fish.
Misconception or mislabeled? This is exactly how people still calling SUSHI Raw fish, which in fact SUSHI is not raw fish but SASHIMI is.

you never know...... the misnomer "beta" is relatively widespread, so I wouldnt be surprised if other misnomers such as that should occur.
you are correct re Sushi vs Sashimi
what happened in this case tho is the identity of sushi maguro(raw tuna with rice roll) as well as some other raw fish on rice .
sashimi added to a rice roll or rice ball (nigiri sushi)
Sashimi itself is the raw fish which may or may not be eaten with rice.
however, I have not found an instance where siamese fighting fish(Betta Splendens) is referred to as Japanese fighting fish. more commonly associated as Siamese .
it is no wonder your host family was bewildered.
