Getting carbon out of Rite Size cartridges?

if people suggest not changing your filter pads until they are basically shot, but also suggest not using carbon all the time, and that old carbon can leech stuff back into the water, that puts people who use cartridges in a bad spot.

I'm wondering though, with the Bio-Wheel, does changing the cartridges really matter? Doesn't the bacteria live mostly on the bio-wheel?

I use Emperor carts for months and months. Rinse and reuse until they start to develop holes. Danged if Marineland is going to get rich on me changing 4 carts weekly, or even monthly.

shoot, when my filter cartridge breaks down I'm just going to make a new one (rena smart filter, best invesment in that tank), the way its designed I can make my own, with some better filter floss

Carbon does not leach stuff back in to the tank....You dont really need the carbon just put a little floss in there and you are good to go.

Easy enough to cut off the floss and stretch a piece of pantyhose over the frame if you want clean media.
