I got a couple of ocellaris at my LFS. They had a sale at $6 each so I couldn't pass the chance up. I wanted to try to form a pair of clowns for my tank.

Anyways, one of the clowns has a horizontal black stripe through its back fin. He appears to be very healthy and swims perfectly fine. Is this a coloration morph? It doesn't look like the black markings or dots that appear from hosting, its too large for that.

do you have a photo for us?

I can get one tomorrow if that would help (my sister is using the camera for the day). Maybe someone else has a similar color morph to compare it to?

Here is a picture:

Edit: My first thought was the hosting burns from corals. But he was the only guy who had this out of 40 clowns. All the other clowns were mark free.

This is not unusual. These could be captive bred clownfish. Due to the small genetic pool in the captive breeding programs, this happens. The tail marking is a bit different but vertical bar irregularities are quite common.

If you can find a copy, read Joyce Wilkerson's book on clownfish. It has a large store of practical and interesting information.
