i have a five gallon tank with a filter air pump and a heater. what fish should i put in it?

A betta,
Or
Snails/shrimp
Or
a trio of male endlers
OR
A dwarf gourami
OR
1 dwarf puffer fish

Not much you can do with it, I think you should try cherry shrimp and endlers, the endlers might eat the baby shrimp though.

Is the tank cycled?

BTW, welcome to AC!

i actually don't have the tank yet. my brother is giving it to me he used to use it for growing plants but he just bought a bigger tank for that so he's giving me the 5 gallon. i will cycle it.

If he's been keeping plants in it with a filter, it might already be cycled unless the water was unfiltered. It sometimes is in a plant tank. Try to get the filter or at least some of the filter media from him. Even a plant tank ends up with organic waste that can establish beneficial bateria in the filter. He might even be generous enough to give you a plant or 2 to get started. They would help buffer the nitrogen in the tank.
There are some other forums that even advocate a high plant population with a low fish population. These places say you don't really need a filter if you can get everything in the right balance. I've never had the level of confidence in my ability to grow plants to let my fish rely on it for their lives.

Do not get a dwarf gourami!!!! Granted I love these fish because I have an all gourami tank the fish will be MISERABLE in a 5 gallon tank! It is just way too small for a gourami who likes to swim and explore the tank. I change my tank around once a week just so they can explore. They require atleast 10 gallons of water.

Go with a Dwarf Puffer because they have TONS of personality and are a blast to watch.

How about returning the tank and getting something that isn't as small 20-30 gallons and be able to have better options when it comes to stocking the tank.

it's a gift from the brother.

I would set it up for snails and shrimp.
there aere some pretty cool shrimp out there.

:iagree: A 5G could easily handle 10+ Cherry or Ghost shrimp and you'd be guaranteed constant action.

Or he could have 5ish shrimp, snails, and a couple endlers.

Btw, DGs need a 10g min, as has been stated.
