It happened so fast... I'm changing to cichlids!

I'm waiting on an e-mail back from her... I asked a lot about them, gave her picture guides of mbuna and tangs, and her e-mail back should pretty much say if I should get them or not...

i'm just trying to be friendly, and i am not, nor am i expected to be an expert. it's not like it's rocket science to keep these fish. take a diarrhea dump down my throat already. also try to find the multi-quote button.

ummm, no i DID NOT. :duh:

Your encouragement is completely misplaced. Who said it was rocket science ? Who said anything but find out what fish they are first and that larger tangs are likely not to do well in a 29 gallon.

I didn't say that you said 'this is so contradictory' I directed that at Bettas who did say it, when she represented that she had been given contradictory advice. In fact she had been given good advice...and no advice, if you consider advice to mean information which you can process at least.

Wow, if you don't have the appropriate tank size for the fish, you shouldn't keep the fish.

It really is that simple.

If you want tried and tested stocking lists of Africans for a 29 gallon tank (same as 20 long) then I seriously suggest you read this:
http://cichlid-forum.com/articles/cookie_cutter_20g.php

And please, take heed of the advice given, it's not fair to put fish in insufficient sized aquaria.

They sound possibly like convicts?
personaly I would just let this person go, they need to lean and having a bunch of tanks does not make you an expert.
That would be funny if they were cons.

I wouldnt do it. You keep mentioning you will try it and if it goes wrong, then it goes wrong. Does this mean you are going to kill the fish. Also, it is cruel to keep fish in smaller tanks then they are supposed to be. They will most likely end up killing eachother.

I have problems with Cichlid-forum's cookie cutter setups. Alot of them are not that great since they recommend 2 types of shellies in a 20g tank. Its recommended to keep only one type of shell dweller per tank unless your tank has a large area for territory (not a 20g or 29g tank).

They are a good guide to help you choose species for a tank, but I wouldn't suggest alot of those setups.

^ A lot of it depends on what particular fish you go for with those cookie cutters and they are well thought out. I do agree with you in that they should be used as a guide rather than a rule, but I have tested several of those set-ups and I have had great success with them. The key is in the varient choice of the species - certain Julidochromis are notoriously more solitary and aggressive than others, etc, the recommendations of that list are generally (I use that word lightly, Cichlids are very individual as we know) the more sociable or docile of the species. They are referring to a 20 long also, the same footprint as a 29 gallon tank. I would personally only recommend one species of shelldweller in a 20 gallon, but I have also tried two species and had no issues (in a 30 gallon tank).

Rather than argue about useful recommendations, we should be more concerned at the advice being given to ILOVEBETTAs by someone who doesn't even know what the fish are in the first place, yet is somehow capable of advising as to what stocking would be ok! I find that somewhat disconcerting, what would concern me more would be if the OP takes such advice in the face of more accurate advice given based on the experience and knowledge of others here.

Well, I guess if you really don't want me to do it that much, I won't do it. :)

good call :) but not because we don't want you to do it - because its the right thing, and we're not being killjoys and trying to spoil your fun just trying to help you make an informed choice.

hey though check out those shell dwellers - you would love them and they would go very well in a 29 like this new tanganyikan tank http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131457

The rift lake cichlids are great fish - but in the right set-up.

You understand that shes not picking these fish, but getting them for free. I think that is the whole point of this thread.
