Do Khuli loaches need sand? I've heard/read conflicting info. i have fine pea gravel with some larger pebbles throughout in my 36 gal tank. i'm still in the process of resetting it up, but i was wanting to get as much info on possible fish before i'm finished the cycle. I'm planning on getting a dwarf gouramisome Harlequin raspboras, a few cherry barbs, and 3-4 ottos (last). are these good tank mates for khulis or should i just get something else instead?
thanks

i just lost all of my fish due to a power failure

and took the opportunity to clean the tank.

kuhlis don't need sand, but from all I've heard they really like it. They like to burrow, but gravel is sometimes a little too hard or sharp for that. If the gravel is smooth, they will likely be fine. You can make them even happier by giving them things to hide under. If there is something they can squirm underneath it will give them an outlet for their need to burrow and hide without having to actually burrow. If you plan it well, you can even make it so they can still be seen.

Bananna plants are great hiding places for kuhlis. they get under the "banannas" and peek out a lot.

As for the tankmates, I've never kept some of them, so I don't know how they would interact. My guess is though, if they get along with the otto, they would get along with the kuhlis.

I've had kuhlis before. I'm not sure about the gourami and the barbs (but I'm inclined to think they'd be okay) I've had harliquins with kuhlis in the past with no problems

I just use ordinary gravel for mine and have never heard they need sand.
I keep bettas with mine, which behave a lot like gouramis so I think they will be fine as long as they are not big enough to eat kuhlis.

PS: Sorry about your late fish.

Gouramis and barbs will be fine with the possible exception of large barbs, of course.

I would only buy kuhlis that have survived shipping in dealers tanks for at least 2 weeks if possible, they don't seem to ship well. Cute fish, I enjoy mine. Good luck.

More people should breed them locally.
