i have decided that i am going to take my pleco and small white african back to the store. so now i will only have the mollies and my big whitie and JD. but i have really come attached to my whitie and want to get him a female friend. if i do, will they fight, or breed?

and to those of you who do not know what species my african is, it is an Albino Socolofi.

also, what would happen if i returned all my fish except for the socolofi and his female, and then got a group of 4-6 silver dollars?

pseudotropheus socolofi is a harem breeder. ! male to 3 or 4 females is about right. 1 male with 1 female runs a great risk that the female will be harassed to death. It is also possible that a female kept in an aggressive tank will be too much for a young male and will kill him.

what size tank are you proposing attempting the breeding ?

your post is not clear but seems to suggest you've been keeping the socolofi in with mollies, a JD and some other white fish. This is a poor choice of tank mates - the socolofi has aggression levels which mollies will not cope with.

What size tank are you proposing for the silver dollars ? They get large. Don't in any even keep them with your rift lake cichlid. The cichlids have different water and dietary requirements, and are far more aggressive.

4-6 silver dollars should be in a 75g tank. . . . they do not stay silver-dollar sized and in fact will grow larger than a man's hand.

a mated pair of africans will kill your mollies and the JD. They simply do not tolerate other fish near them during breeding, and your tank is not stocked appropriately to minimize aggression in the africans. and no, you shouldn't try to breed JD's or convicts in there either, unless those pairs are going to be the only fish in the tank.

Yea, especially in a 29 gallon. They will kill off all the other fish.

so if i take my other fish back to the store, and get 4 females, would that be alright? or would i need to definately upgrade my tank size first?

75g minimum......mine were too aggressive for a 55g. ;)

And the only sure way to sex Albino socolofi is by venting. :) Good luck!
