Anybody have a good remedy to keep the cats from messing with the hoses?

The best method would be to kick the cats out, but I am not allowed to do that.

So what can I put on the hoses to keep them from chewing them up?

HELP, My fishes need to breath :goldfish:

Try rubbing the hoses with hot sauce, should deter the cats from going anywhere near them. Good luck!

that is a good way to do it, but i wouldnt recommend touching ANYTHING that is related to your fish tank with hot sauce or anything of the like.. there's no telling the torture your fish would go through, seeing as how a fish's entire outer body is a mucous membrane, which is what the oils in hot sauce irritate.

I have some small-ish PVC pipe around mine for that reason.
You could put something nasty-tasting on it that wouldn't harm your fish... Prime smells horrible, see how your cat likes the small, putting a little on the tube might help if he/she doesn't like the smell.

The pvc pipe is a good idea. There is also something called "Boundary" out there that you can spray around the tank that will keep the cats away. Naturally don't spray it close enough to the tank to get it in, but around on the floor should help. You can also try putting crinkled tin foil on the floor under the hose (so the cat would have to step on it to bite the hose). The tin foil will irritate their feet and chase them away. I have 5 tanks and 3 cats so I have had several reasons to try both remedies. The worst was the cat sitting on the hood drinking the water as it came out of the filter. Tin foil on the hood solved that. Oh, and giving the cat a water fountain seemed to help too. Good luck!

One cat loves the water in my FW tank.

I tried the pliers thing, but because the teeth are tapered the pliers just slipped off.

What seems to have worked, is silicon hose with habenero/cayane wiped on it.

I bought some sheath for the hose, but don't seem to need it. I do not care if they walk around the tank, infact I get a kick out of them trying to catch the fish. One day the stupid cat will fall in I hope.

Thanks
