Is there such a thing in the planted world as too many watts per gallon? Something like 6 wpg. Because from what I have seen, most people have around 2 or 3, but I may just be misuided. I am more concerned with plants like java fern and other low-light plants that it would be too bright, if there is such a thing...

i think in nature the sun produces far more than 6 wpg

good point but I dont think a lot of plants from the lfs are "used" to that intense of light. I don't know if it makes a difference but I was wondering about a 192W fixture on my 30 gal. I know it sounds like over kill but it is cheap, and I mean cheap. I guess I could tone down the lighting a bit if I needed to.

The biggest problem IMO is keeping CO2, and nutrients where they need to be. Plants in nature have a never ending supply of nutrients flowing by them, this doesn't hold true in a closed system like an aquarium.

No Co2 at the moment, though I wish I had the time to deal with one.

Some low light plants can't handle that much light. It's best to keep them in shaded areas of the tank.
