i am looking to upgrade my filter on my 55 gal tank but would like to buy something that i can use for a saltwater set up in the future if i want to - the rena xp3 seams like a great deal but dont know if it works for salt water - also the HOB filter that say they are ok for saltwater - will they still do the same volume of water?

i want to get into a small(25-35gal) saltwater / Reef tank but am going to have to get the equipment slowly and want stuff i can use now as well as in the reef tank eventualy - thanks

The XP3 will work for salt water.

I think you want something of the order of 10x turnover per hour for salt water aquariums.

As for the same volume of water, I'm not really sure.

I think the question was more regarding, will the same filter be adequate for equal volumes of fresh or salt water, and the answer is generally no. Most FW tanks of mine have flow rates between 3-10x per hour turnover, depending on the type of filtration. My reef tank is closer to 20x per hour. It depends on what kind of setup you want as well, fish-only reef, etc. The answer is, yes you will be able to use the XP3 on a sw tank, but you may need to supplement that with more filters or powerheads depending on the route you take.

oops, yeah that's right, had a slight lapse in memory.

10x for fw 20-30x for sw

thanks for the correction :)

Well it all depends...several of my fw tanks run wet/dry filters, so they have a turnover of about 3x per hour because its very efficient filtratiion. The ones with canisters or HOBs have closer to 7-10x turnover. You only need to get up to 20+x turnover for reefs I believe, if you're going FO or FOWLR you can get by with 10-15x turnover.

so for say a 30 gal tank i would need a filter that is 600-750 GPH how do you know how big of a wet/dry sump do you need ?
