I use aqua safe, but I have seen alot of people on here and the tetra care forum use prime... is prime better? why? Is aqua safe just as good? I use aqua safe, at first cause it is what came with my first 10 gal, so after that was out I got a bottle of it and have ever since, I never knew about prime till recently so I just use aqua safe now. I also like that it also helps get rid of heavy metals since I have hard water and that it adds a protective/healing slime coating for the fish (supposedly at least).

Should I switch to prime? Will the switch hurt my fish? what benefits are there to using prime VS aquasafe?

I thought it added smile cause the aquasafe is.. well. .. slimey......

Also... I looked at walmart. ... prime was more expensive???

can you tell me why the prime is better? I just want what is best for my fish.

Prime takes out Cl & supresses all forms of nitrate - and does no more and it's tough to OD on it - it can even be used in excess to ameliorate ammonia and nitrite spikes. See Seachem's www site for more.

It's cheaper because it's 2 drops per gallon, 1mL/10gallons
It's a ton cheaper if purchased in >250mL bottles, online or w/ matching of online prices.

I see... its 5 ml/10 gal for aqua safe.

I know some people use extra aqua safe for the slime coat/healing purposes when fish are sick/injured.. is there a separate product you might recommend for this purpose? What about the heavy metals issue? Another product? Maybe It would end up being more expensive with the prime and product for metals?

Prime...best value for the money...

Prime...more bang for the buck and detoxifies ammonia/nitrite (emergencies only not a substitute for water changes).

aqua safe detoxifies ammo as well.

I discovered this on accident once when I did a water change and forgot the aqua safe.. 3 large water changes and the ammo did not go down. I realized I had forgotten the aquasafe. I added it and my ammo was lower.

my tanks are all cycled now and I plan to do regular water changes so I don't really need nor want anything for ammonia, if I have any present I would rather do a water change than add something to get rid of it.

If you have heavy metal issues, find a new water source. If that isn't a possibility, add a little EDTA, let settle out, decant carefully.

For injuries, Pimafix and/or Melafix or a broad spectrum fishy antibiotic may be helpful.

the only way to find a new water source is to buy bottled spring water.. the cost of that would really add up. I don't know if I do have heavy metals but with well water it is possible and I wouldn't want to take the chance. what is edta?
