LCD Lighting?

I visited my LFS to pick up some seasalt and saw their new display tank. Their display tank is amazing. Apparently they use LCD lighting. They showed the lighting system and it looked pretty amazing. It has multiple colors and can create many different effects. It can do a sunset, night time, storm coverage, wave effect and other type of lighting effects. It looked completely different than any marine lighting system I have ever seen. And the corals look even better! Their metal halide tank was right next to it and it looked so plan compared to LCD tank.

I drew a fast picture of the lighting fixture. The squares contain different colors. Has anyone ever heard of people using LCD lighting? They said it isn't popular yet because people don't know if it will grow sps and other high demanding corals, but my LFS does have several types of sps that are doing well in there.

Are you sure they didnt say LED and not LCD. They are suppose to be better than MH and much cheaper to run but the price tag on those systems are very high, is this the one you saw.

Yup, you are correct. Its LED. Has anyone else seen these in action? If they were cheaper I would love to invest in one.

I am heading out to a couple of LFS's tommorrow and I think one of them has one setup as a display and if they do I will see what I can find out from them. These things are not cheap tho

Yo those things are NOT cheap at all. I went to other sites as well and the cheap one is $800. Maybe I'll stick with the Sunpod. lol:grinyes:

Yup, they are pretty pricey. My LFS paid 5k for theirs. And the tank was only about 6ft long. 5k was the non-markup price. They said if they sold it in stores it would be 8k.

However, it looks like its worth it. I image it pays for itself in a couple of years. MH often require chillers if you live in a sunny area. So not only do you have the buy the chillers, but also power them.

I guess these fixtures are part of my dream tank. Hopefully they become more popular and the price goes down. They are fairly new technology. But being able to see them in person is awesome.

Sounds like a really cool light system. I think I'll wait a few years until they drop in price.

I've seen them yes, but I still prefer the look of the light the MHs give off. Shimmer...sparkly...ooooh
