Carpet Protection?

I have one of those "Little Green Machines" and also invested in a python system.

Great ideas, thanks folks!! :grinyes:

I think I will be going with the vinyl idea under the tanks, and mounting me some hand towel hooks on the walls!! I like the wet/dry vac idea too - will be investigating!

I actually found buckets 'safer' than the hose system I'm using now - I well and truly had 'high tide' in the living room recently when I decided to quickly check AC for 'just 5 minutes' while the tank was filling!! :duh:

My mother is going to be the new landlord - not sure if this is a good thing or not. One major spill and I will be hearing about it for the rest of my life!! :eek3:

Thanks for finding the link for me!! :)

Am a bit concerned with the 'absorbs' spills part tho - if it's permanently under the aquariums then how would you get the absorbed water out of the mat?

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here :D

Still leaning towards the wet/dry vac idea!

Even though I ensure that I've always got a towel under the tank, I always spill something especially when lugging the bucket(s) up the stairs etc.. you're always going to spill something, it's only a matter of time before you do, the wet/dry vac idea is the best idea for when that situation arises I reckon.

The best offense is a good defense!!!

  • Towels (preferably old ones, you should have a few strictly for aquarium usage)
  • Towel for covering the top of the faucet (incase your python connector spouts a leak and sprays water everywhere, it will prevent it from leaving the sink)
  • Towel(s) under the aquarium, so if any spills were to occur the water wouldn't seep thru into the carpet. Towels are easy to replace when they are wet and nasty, carpets arent!
  • If you are still using buckets, go buy a python siphon, it will make a world of a difference.
  • Don't cook and fill up your tank (I've had a few CLOSEEEEEEEE calls with my 90G and it was almost VERY VERY BAD, lmao)
  • If you are that bad or clumsy with your duties to your fishies, I recommend double the towels! :grinyes:

well there are ultra absorbent towels that are used by hikers. They can soak up like a 2 gallons of water. That is what i use. DR. Fosters and Smith has a mat that is ultra absorbent and it has a waterproof backing in case any water gets through. it is only $11.00 and it is called the Drymate aquarium cleaning mat. i hope that helps.

You can always treat the carpetting with a 3M product......I think it's available at Home Depot.......it's not as good as coming from the factory with the Stainmaster product sprayed on.......BUT......it is a type of spray silicone that you can spray on that will not allow the water to penetrate.......it will bead up and be easier to clean up with a towel of wet/dry vac.

(Turns out you can get the ScothGard at your local Grocery Store)

OR

To be even more obvious.......you could go to Staples and pick up one of those clear hard plastic carpet mats that go under your desk to so your chair rolls easily on it. That could help!! Maybe?

Good Luck!!

I've found garbage bags to work the best for me. I just put a couple down - one under the stand and in in front where I keep my bucket when changing the water - and keep a bath towel handy to wipe my hands/arms and the tank when I'm done. Towels under the tank make me nervous just because the water seeps right through them and the carpet gets damp anyway, and with the garbage bags, I've never had any water "fall off." When you're done, just use the towel to wipe up any water and either fold the towels up for the next water change or use them to take the trash out! Hope this helps!
