So right now I have an aquaclear 150 and a hagen elite internal filter (58gph) and the aquaclear I also use for circulation, and it is obviously 150 gph. Well, My tank is pretty much a FOWLR with 15 pounds of live rock and some mushrooms. My total gph right now is about 210 on my 20, so that is roughly 10x. I am getting a bit of some type of brown algae on my sand bed since there is not too much flow there and some detritus is building up there. From the site petsmart, which powerhead would you reccomend as I am going to petsmart to buy one because of the price match. Also, what size or model would you get?? I was thinking maybe two of the aquaclear 101's, how would that be. Those two and my elite internal would bring me up to about 220 plus my filter, which I don't know if it actually helps.
Thanks a lot.

I personally would go with either a Hydor Koralia 1 or a Hydor Koralia Nano depending on depending on how much flow your aiming for. The Nano doesn't disperse flow as much as the other models but it still works well. I personally would probably go with the Koralia 1. They aren't sold at petsmart though. Here is a link:

I have the penguin 1140 on my 30 gallon and it does a good job. Had it for about 5 yrs, no complaints. My friend has one on his 180 and it has outlasted 2 of the powersweeps (I have had 3 powersweeps and junked all three). I bought korillas for my reef and have loved them so far, but I didn't see that as an option so I commented on the 2 i do know about.

alright, does anyone have any info on the aquaclear or the ball type powerheads though??
thanks.

I'd sincerely forgo the price match and get the Koralias. You'll be happier with them and spend less than you would have in the long run having to replace ones that don't work as well as you may wish.

This pretty much sums it up. If you are looking for something cheaper you could go with maxi jets but I am not a huge fan of the type of flow they give off.

I was going through old fish equipment and found an aquaclear powerhead mixed in with the powersweeps. As you can tell it left a lasting impression on me. Although I don't know much about the ball one I would stay away from the powersweep. The maxi-jets are nice, but I don't remember seeing them on the site, the penguins are nice as well. The only problem with them is they have a squared off outlet which means you can't add on different tips (such as the hydor flo).

So wait are you saying the aquaclear's are good? I'm just gonna go to petsmart to pick up two of the small aquaclears' and try them out. If they don't do the job, I have 30 days+ to return it so it's all good. Sorry to go your advice again but I mean I can return it if need be so sorry. I will still use your replies to my tanks welll being though and thanks.

So for this time it's pretty much between the Aquaclear 310 and the eheim aquaball and finally the one of the penguin powerheads. Out of these, which would you pick? I have read really good reviews for the aquaclear and good ones for the penguin, but haven't read any for the ball.

Thanks.

make sure (call) the petsmart you are going to. the website often carries products we do not carry instore... ie my store does not carry the eheim nor have i seen those at any other petsmarts i've been to. the site offers like 30,000 additional products or something like that...

and there is no return policy regarding date. you can pretty much return anything at anytime for any reason as long as we can find a upc for it... save ur receipt for cash back otherwise there's always store credit.

anyways... most of what is in store isn't spectacular to say the least. i've used the penguins in my tank and they work well. the power sweep was absolutely dissappointing and had very little power IMO.

either way, most you'll loose is a trip to the store and maybe some gas, right?
