My choices are
  • Top Fin,
  • Hydor Theo,
  • Rena Top Cal
  • Neptune
  • Marlineland Premium
  • Jager
  • and if it is really worth it maybe a rena smart heater(name is something like that)

I personally use the Visi-Therm Deluxe:

Any heater though should be used with a controller, that way if it sticks on or malfunctions, there is at least something to possibly fix the problem. Even use 2 smaller heaters, that way if one fails, there is still another to back it up. Just an idea.

my jager seems to not be able to hold a constant temp in my ten gallon tank. my stealth on the other hand does a great job

i've had a neptune running for 3 years... never a problem... finally changed it just to be on the safe side as i believe I've heard its best to change every 2 yrs... i'd definately buy another neptune again...

Hydor Theo seem okay as well... and i just got a visi-therm stealth that i'm very satisfied with...

I use Visitherm Stealth (IMHO - better than the delux line). I would probably be happy w/ Hydor too.

Ebo Jaegers - the older ones (solid green less the little light window, very little heads on them) were the stuff in their day, newer ones are reputed to be less reliable than their predecessors.

I tried the Stealth before when doing a homemade incubator for my reptiles. Wasn't impressed at all and ended up returning it. The thing could not maintain a temperature for the life of it (I tried 2 different ones, all it had to do was keep the 3-5 gallons of water at 80F, and there was a pump in there to help circulate the water). Just didn't work, but the deluxe was able to do it. Weird if you ask me, I just never had good luck with those Stealth ones.

yeah lots of times there are flaws in some like can not hold a steady temp EVER like i mentioned about my jager one but i know that they can and DO hold temp so i am sure i got a faulty one.

Very similar experience. Loved the concept of the Stealth (non-glass, all back, shuts off out of water) and ordered it. However it took days to get it to increase the temp of a 55, warm to the touch (was doing something), but even the highest setting was poor. Returned it, replaced it with a Jager, have never been happier. Could have been QC or a fluke, but have never been happier with the Jager.

In fact, prior to the Jager I was used to a temp flux of around 1-2 degrees in the tank, on occassion depending upon the day. However using the same wattage Jager, the temp never moves, perfect, and never had a problem.
