setting up 110g for plants later today ?s!

Okay, I'm going to get some of fluorite to put in the bottom of this tank, but I can't get 110 pounds of the stuff, so my ? is, can I just put a thin layer on the bottom of that and then put gravel & play sand on top and then put in my plants and will that be good? Or do I NEED more of the fluorite or laterite or whatever for my plants to do well?

Basically, just tell me what to do, so I set this thing up right the first time.

I believe your idea will work. But don't take my word for it. I'm still new to plants.

For large tanks I wouldn't use Flourite, look for Soilmaster Select instead. The distributor is www.lesco.com. Soilmaster Select is much cheaper ($15-20 per 50lb bag) and a better substrate.

Another option is zeolite sand, or zeosand, commonly found in pool shops as swimming pool filter sand. It's about $25 for the 25lb bag.

and the soil master is it safe for fishies?

Yes it is, it's basically fired clay similar to Flourite.

Lowes and Home Depot carry Shultz aquatic soil which is also fairly cheap and works well. Soilmaster Select is manufactured by a company called Oil-Dri (I think), and Lesco is one of their distributors.

If you can find a Lesco near you(check their website www.lesco.com) it's pretty cheap now. I just bought a 50lbs bag for $9.50. Aside from some mulm, I'm only going to use the soilmaster. A product named Turface will also work pretty well.

I did find a Lesco! You guys are awesome! I had the hubby stop at Lowes on the way home to pick up some silica sand to use. I did some reading and decided against play sand. I plan to try and go get the soilmaster stuff tomorrow. They said they have charcoal color that they've been having people request for use in aquariums. Do you know if the charcoal color is okay, or should I get the tan?

Anyway, so the soilmaster will go on bottom first, then I'll put in the sand with some rocks mixed in that we already have. They're nice smooth natural rocks, also picked up from Home Depot! Varying sizes and colors too. I think it will look really nice. I can't wait to move my cories into this! And my clown loach and I'm going to get him 2 friends. So excited!

Check this out! I have a buyer for the live rock and salty supplies that came with the tank and I'm going to make back almost all the money we spent on the tank! How much does that rock? OMG, I made a pun. :evil_lol::grinyes:
