bascially i have a pond and the specs should be in my sig. its about 500-550 gallons. i live in new york so we have four seasons.....the pond is 3 ft deep at the deepest part. i know fancies are said ot be more fragile then common but i overlooked that and we already had snow and ice and everything.

well today i wake up normally i dont look at the pond but i go outside and see the pond had "defrosted" and i happen to look at the end and see the goldfish lying belly up with its stomach out the water i was like ah sh1t cuz i had it since may. i go over and look at it and touched it and was like ah it must of died very recently. but then i seen its gills moved i was like WTF. so i grab a bowl and scoop it up with water and bring it inside.

now at this point i have an empty 10g just sitting there with nothing in it. the pond water is very cold and this water is room temp but i am running out of time. i get a huge zip block bag and slowly let in water. the warmer water seemed to stimulate it and evenrtually i let it out but it was just floating on the top breathing...every once in a while getting pushed down by the filter current. i decided to turn the filter off to let it gain its strength.

i just got back from work and it seems almost perfectly healthy.

it went from being belly up in a pond with snow on the ground to about 74 degree water in about 5 minutes but i didnt have a choice....seems like i made the right one.

i have a bunch of rosey reds in the pond they are zipping around doing great. next year im just gona have a larger school of them plus 2 commets or shubunkins or one of each plus the roseys.

ill keep the goldfish in the 10g for now at least.

now for my next question....can i get by with it in the 10g with nothing but like snail? i know the "rule of thumb" is 10g of water per fancy but everyone has their opinions as to whats ok and not.

sorry for the long post

As long as you keep the tank clean and a filter running the fish should be just fine for a couple of months. As you've already found out goldfish can take a lot and survive. You just have to be very careful because when you only have 10 gal of water as it can go bad very, very, fast. Just remember to feed him very sparingly for the next few weeks as he won't be very hungry. If you don't put him back in the pond this spring you will definitely have to upgrade to a larger tank.

are there any heaters in that pond? A friend of mine has a pretty decent size pond with several glass tube heaters in it. I dont think he ever takes the fish out.. We live up by Lake Michigan, near Chicago.

na not heaters. "wild" body fish like the minnows and comets/shubunkins will do well. pond isnt big enough for koi plus i keep plants.

i dont think i am going to put this goldfish back in if this is the outcome. rather keep it indoors.

what about summer can it be ok without an ac? i dont usually run it cuz my dad is an electrician and a pain in the @$$

The fish will survive just fine in the summer with out AC. Just be sure to have a bubbler to oxygenate the water. Warmer water holds less air so they start having a hard time if it gets too warm. If you plan on keeping him indoors please put him in a 30+ gallon tank. He'll be much happier and your tank will stay a lot cleaner.

Why did you get fancys for your pond knowing your temp gets so cold? Fancys arent meant to stay in those temps, and it will outgrow your 10 gallon eventually. You should only have commets/shubunkins for your pond not fancys.
