How many Oscars?

i've got a tiger oscar and an albino oscar in my 75 gallon. both are about 4" now. they're in with a albino channel cat which is around 5". the channel cat will eventually end up in a pond, but the oscars are fine. my water changes are 25% every saturday. no problems with nitrites or ammonia. you just have to take everyones opinion here with a grain of salt. most will throw out opinions without ever having kept said fish. they're simply repeating what they've heard.

yeah but shawn are your fish full grown? lol, no. 4in isnt even 4 months old. wait until they reach sexual maturity. and then again until they are full grown. lol you're in a for a treat if you dont think you will have to up water changes. or if your fish arent compatible one will die if not both of them

lol

Believe it or not, oscars are not quite as delicate as you have been indicating. I have a friend who keeps 3 12" oscars, a 10" pleco, a convict and a 7" JD in a 55gal tank with a Penguin HOB filter. I don't even want to imagine the nitrate levels in this tank. By no means am I advocating this - I've tried to convince them that its a terrible idea, I've educated them, and I think at this point they're planning on getting rid of the fish and fishtank. However, these fish have been living together for over 2 years, and I was amazed at how healthy they looked. I helped them move the tank and really expected them to be in tatters, HITH, pale colors, etc, but they weren't. Like I said, its a terrible idea, but clearly a day at nitrates over 40ppm is not lethal.

mine are still very young. no doubts about that. i've kept oscars in the past together with no problems then either. back in the day, there weren't any test kits or all of these nonsense chemicals. the only thing necessary was chlorine remover. all it takes is some company to come up with a chemical and tout it as THE only thing to use to keep fish and everyone jumps on the wagon. same with fish. someone says that you cannot keep that fish in that size tank, and certainly not TWO! please. who makes up those rules? someone who had a bad experience and now everyone takes it as gospel. i'm just saying, it's your tank, your money. do what you want. if it doesn't work, do something else. but to NOT keep a fish just because people SAY it won't work is ridiculous.

i'll bet more than half of the posters in this thread have never kept an oscar.

And, as equally true, there are folks who could say the do (have) and it not be true.

It is not so much as what can or can not be done, as it is how it is done and what is best; all very undefinable terms.

You could get away with less frequent water changes, provided adequate filtration and not overfeeding.

You could have Oscars that are just not going to work together for whatever genetically induced reasons, or have three males that get along fine as I have had in the past.

Many fish, can get along in smaller tanks than often proposed, but untold numbers of others die because they are kept in too small of a tank or under inappropriate conditions.

It all comes down to what the individual hobbist has personally resolved is correct.

I personally say keeping an Oscar in a 20 gallon tank will not work in the long run. Would you still recommend that someone does...? An add on will be, just because someone says "it will work" doesn't mean it will.

Lighten up please and stay helpful. Thanks.

where did a 20 gallon come from? the question is about a 75 gallon. keep up with the thread. i'm trying to be helpful. a person is interested in keeping some fish. instead of people trying to help and explain how it CAN be done, everyone is saying not to do it. how is that helpful?

i'm sure the next step will be to ban me now.

Lighten up please and stay helpful. Thanks.

yes, please keep up with the thread...

from you post....

but to NOT keep a fish just because people SAY it won't work is ridiculous.

So, I made a statement and said it wouldn't work.

Please end this now. If you would like to argue with me in Pm, PLEASE DO SO.
