This is my planned stock for my 36g bowfront. Let me know what you guys think. I don't think the tank will support all of these fish so I need to know what can stay and what can't. Also this will be an "over time" stock of a few months. All fish are not going in at once. And they are in no real order but I plan on starting out with the Tetras. But I really do want the betta so lets try to work around that I guess. Thanks guys.
1- Nice male Betta
1-leopard ctenopoma
3 or 4-Kuhli Loach (Pangio kuhlii)
1 or 2-Dwarf Gourami
1-paradise fish
about 8 or so-Neon Tetra
1 or 2-Angel fish
1-LongFin Bushynose Pleco
and something on the bottom like a cray or frog or something

HI there. In my experience the betta will not get along with the dwarf gouramis or the paradise fish, so I would skip them both since you really want the betta. If you opt against the betta, I would just go with the dwarf gouramis. The paradise fish can be aggressive and I would not get one. Just my two cents.

:iagree:

Also, I'd be a little worried that the Neons would nip at the Betta's fins. Harlequin Rasboras would go better with the Betta.

I wouldn't go with any angels. They would eventually eat the neons, and they usually don't get along with bettas.

Generally speaking, the chances are slim male bettas and dwarf gouramis will get along, but for the paradise fish, the chances are a lot slimmer. I would try 2 female honey gouramis instead of dwarves, because they are a lot more timid and submissive. I wouldn't do the paradise either.

The ctenopoma get BIG, I'm talking an average 6". This is also an ambush predator with a giant mouth. I'm guessing he'd be able to fit everything besides the angel(s) and the bristlenose.

Although the only cray you would be able to get is the dwarf (which are very nice but pretty rare), the other option is shrimp. Cherries or amanos would be fine, you could try ghosts but whenever I see/hear of them they're eating small fish/shrimp.

I have had 8 different bettas and currently 4 females with neons, and they don't seem to know each other exist. My neons have only ever been nippy when my parems were wacked, and that was only amongst themselves.

This is what I would do:

1 Betta
6 Kuhli loaches
2 Honey gouramis(fm)
8-10 neons
1-LongFin Bushynose Pleco

And a few cherries and/or amanos

You could also keep the neons at 8 and the kuhlis at 4-5 and look for other fish that interest you. You could beef up the number of honeys to 3 if you wanted and keep everything as I put it, but that's totally up to you.

I agree that the betta does not fit with neither the gourami nor the paradise fish. Also, I dont think the betta and angel wold get along very well but each betta is different. Also, leopard ctenopomas get relatively large, around 4-6" I believe and are predatory. Not good with any tetra or rasbora probably less than 2.5 inches, maybe even larger. Angels with neons can be problamatic as well, the neons may end up as snacks.

May I suggest:

1 Angel, or possibly a defined pair
8 deeper bodied tetras (lemon, diamond, ect...)
4 kuhli loaches
1 Bn pleco

Or you can swipe out the angel for either the betta, paradise, or dwarf gourami...if you want you could get neons then

As stated the Gourami, Angels, Paradise fish, and Bettas are non-compatible. Do you have a favorite?

Well I thought the Angels were the favorites, but thats only because I always see the "run of the mill pet shop Bettas" I have just started to see all the different types like the DT and Crowntails and such. So I think I am leaning towards Betta as the favorite (which I never thought would happen) But it seems that If I got the betta I would be very limited on what else I could get....

Well kept Bettas are incredible looking. You wouldn't necessarily be limited, but there would be some types of fish you'd want to avoid (you just happened to list most of them) :). If you want a Betta as a center-piece fish, you'll want to avoid nippers and other territorial fish. Most Anabantoids (Gourami, Paradise, Bettas) are territorial by nature. For a tank that centered on a pretty Betta, I'd probably opt for a large school of tetras (or 2 smaller ones) and a large school of cories. It sounds boring with only 3 or 4 types of fish, but the activity and behaviors of the fish in nice groupings is actually far more interesting to me than a large variety of improper sized schools. Just my 2 cents.

The betta could be inserted with the tetras, loaches and pleco. There is no major problem with that mix. The tetras might nip the betta but most likely not. The will probably just stay to theit own

Loaches can be a bit nippy IME, though I do love them so... :)
