Light Problem

I am not sure if they have a starter or not (a little round thing that twists in a socket). It could be that or the ballast itself. Make sure there is power getting to the ballast.

Yea at first i thought it was the starter but there was none so now im thinking its the ballast. Will try and see if the current is actually going to and from the ballast. If its the ballast how much is it to replace it?? I see some sites and its $40+ . is it even worth replacing it?

If you can get the ratings off the ballast you can go to a local eletrical supply store and get most for maybe $20 to $30 depending on what you need. You can also get the most common ones at places like home despot.

I was looking around the house and noticed one of the storage spaces in the house has a 24" 2 bulb fixture. I tried the bulb there and it works. I wonder how much that 2 bulb fixture is regularly in stores, if its less than $40 then maybe it will be time for a DIY project.

If you are going to replace the ballast you could get one that is made for 2 bulbs and overdrive the one you have. This is a cheap way to get a lot more light out of one bulb. You can google Overdriving flourescents or check out my fishy stuff under DIY.

I was looking through a petsolutions magazine and came across a double socket w/switch. One that takes those screw in compact fluorescent bulbs. Thats when my imagination ran wild and I thought instead of making myself a tube hood, what if i install 3 of those double socket things into my current hood, giving me 6 mini cf bulbs (each 14w). The strip is 29in (for 29g) and each of those socket things with the bulbs is 9in giving me only half an inch space between the hood/bulb bulb/bulb. Can this work? would i need a ballast? What other possible things would i need?
(my photoshop work :P)

I figured online each of the double socket things is $5 x3 = $15
Bulbs $5 for pack of 4 x2= $10
Wiring free
Final price ==== $25 (thats if w/o ballast or any other stuff needed)
Full wattage = 84watts or 2.9wpg

its either this or a $40 65w pc fixture.

Help me out guys

Sounds like a plan.....more light for less money is a good thing :)
