ok. is it better to also add the magnum though? i don't mind the few extra bucks to get the extra filtration and circulation.

You could get TWO xp3 filters for the price of 1 ehiem really.here, print this out buddy and bring it to your local petsmart and take advantage of their pricematch deal..
If it is circulation you are looking for, the xp3 will provide all of that and filtration, put on the jet spray and you could chop off an arm if you wanted too..go for 2 xp3's.

It would be nice to get a second filter for redundancy but the XP3 alone will let you move forward with your plans and have money left for your other needs.

also, i am picking up my 75 gal tonight, and the owner told me of this specific substrate that is really good for african cichlids, but it is pretty expensive. play sand will do just fine as a substrate right?
Not a bad idea... they're wonderful little filters. I haven't run one by itself, but I've no doubt that even with my bioload, a single XP3 would be sufficient for my tank. (though I would likely introduce a small powerhead to minimize dead spots) I presently have an XP3 and Emperor 400 on my 55g tank, which I know is overkill, but I prefer the water turnover rate to be at least 10 times the volume of the tank per hour. (based on the rated flow rates... I know that they're not moving quite THAT much water, especially once the filter media gets some stuff in it) If I had to give an honest guess, the XP3 is probably moving something like 250gph and the emperor likely the same... but these are in no way guaranteed to be the actual numbers... I haven't measured or anything, I'm just comparing the outflow to a pond pump I have which is rated for 250gph. (and I tested with no pre-filter and at 6" head... so I figured that was safe to evaluate to be its maximum potential flow rate)
ya. i'll have a powerhead that is supossed to move 350gph, but i doubt that i have been getting that much. plus i might invest in a second powerhead later on, depending on how my africans are doing.
