starting my new 55gal

I have decided to get three tinfoil barbs and the school of tiger barbs. I will hold off on the clown loaches for now. I know my parents are willing to help with the tank and will enjoy it in their house. They also are willing to help pay for the equipment since it will be in their house for so long. I think monthly water changes are fine. That is what I do with my 20gal and everything in there has been healthy. Thank you all for your help. I am really looking forward to putting this 55gal together.
A group of tinfoil barbs is too big for a 55g. How about Arulius barbs?

Why would you want to have an aquarium that you will not see and cannot maintain properly?

Weekly water changes are not essential for a healthy aquarium. Yes I do weekly water changes as well as the majority of other users of this site. If you have a lighter bio-load and don't over feed your fish, a bi-weekly water change may be adequate.

BTW, Tin Foils get too big, and are pigs. No way your water parameters would allow you to do monthly water changes on a tank with tin foils in there. They are hardy but anything else in the tank would be put in jeopardy.

Unless you have a school of dwarf rasboras in a heavily planted 30g, weekly water changes are what you need. Especially if you're planning to put in 3 tinfoil barbs which can reach 18" (and have for 12 Volt Man) and 6 clown loaches that can reach 16" (but more likely 12").

I would go with 12 tiger barbs and build on. Any other ideas that you might want to ask before planning?
