I was thinking of replacing the crushed corals with pool filter sand, but was worried about the ph level going down. I read on the cichlid forum that if I put the crushed coral in my filter it will do a better job of keeping the ph stable as the water will constantly be flowing through it. Will this be good enough for keeping my ph level high?

Tuffo rock in the filter will be better.
Have you ever used bicarbonate soda. It`s cheap and very effective.

Where can I get Tuffo rock? I have never used bicarbonate. With the crushed coral substrate I never had to worry about any additives to raise the ph, that's why I was debating wheter I should get aragonite sand instead of pool filter sand although I think pool filter sand looks much better and is cheaper. I do have lava rocks in the aquarium but I'm not sure if they help with ph.

That white chalky rock that your LFS should have is Tuffo rock. I heard Lava rock is good but I have never used it so can`t talk from experience.

I don't think lava rock has any significant effect on ph, people just use the crushed lava rock in their filters for biological filtration as the bacteria has greater surface to grab on to. Alot of people I know who choose to use non aroganite sand use crushed coral in their filters.

So I guess if I go with pool filter sand I can put a bag of crushed coral in my wet/dry filter and that should take care of the ph level. Do you know if I need to replace the crushed coral over time?

Does the pool filter sand come in white color? The one at home depot was borwn, just like the beach sand. In some forums I read that there is a white one. Am I looking at the wrong kind?
