My new aviary

no no no!! you can not put these birds together. I am sorry but big birds and little birds? soft and hookbill? no way ! Also hope you have alternatives for when it rains and gets cold out. :)

yeah, you definitely need an alternative when it gets cold out.

it's fine if it rains and its warm, but if its cold, they can become ill.

also, you need toys for the parrots, lots of toys, make sure you add forage toys also, and more branches. kakarikis are also VERY active and can make the other parrots uncomfortable.

i'd suggest building up some indoor cages, one for the parrots, and one for the finches and canaries, you can use the one you already have for the parrots, and build a smaller one for the softbills, also an outdoor pen for the chickens and quail..

i don't want to sound mean, but you should have asked for our opinions before you bought the birds.

Also... Before introducing new birds to your existing population, whatever species you end up with, have each bird checked by a good avian vet, screened for disease, and quarantined for probably at least a month.

Female cockatiels and other psittacines can become egg-laying machines, leading to things like calcium deficiency, egg binding, and other problems. A female with an overactive reproductive system can be quite a headache, and it can take quite a commitment to the bird and adjusting the environment to downregulate the cues for breeding.

And a double door system is a good idea.

Don't worry, the birds have been checked up.
The chickens are also beening checked for diseases.
There door has a pulley system.
Ok so no softbills, i have done research believe me, i have been told that softbill will be fine with these bird thought?
The aviary is not quite done yet, nest boxes and other things are still on there way.

Wow what are you guys the avian police?

we just want to make sure you and the birds are happy and safe, imagine what a nightmare it would be if you walked over to the cage and saw a finch massacre..

Thanks i was just joking about the avian police thing.
Don't worry about food, i got it from a top bird breeder in the western cape, unfortunately i did not talk about stocking birds.

P.S do you know any bird forums that, well know birds?
And could i keep budgies in there?

lol, i know you were joking :)

i guess people in AUS have different views..the problem is..the hookbills have VERY strong beaks, budgies are known to bite the feet of finches and canaries, which can lead to the loss of digits..finches also have toothpick thin necks, it wouldn't take much for a hookbill to break it.

as for the budgies..well, since the other parrots except the cockatiels are parakeets, yes you can keep 2-3 budgies...i wouldn't suggest any more though, you are going to have your hands full.

as for bird forums

www.theperch.net is a great place, the people are friendly as well as very knowledgeable, my username is TakeFlight there..just for future referance.

be sure to give them a nice varied diet, seeds(should be given as a treat), pellets, fruits, veggies, rice, eggs, pasta..add in food that have high amounts of calcium, like hard boiled eggs crushed up with the shell, dandelion greens, collard greens, kale.. just in case the females start laying.

avoid chocolate, avacado, coffee beans, apple seeds, and cola.
