Internal filters are quieter (I don't know why I didn't think of that), heck, like I have stated, the quiet1 is quiet until you get up close, and that thing is a beast compared to those little things. That would be your best option.

The quietest power filter I have used is a MEI TechnoFlo Bio power filter. These things are virtually dead silent and have great filtering abilities. I would get the Bio 65 and turn the flow down to about half that.
They are overrated with the tank sizes (as with all filters), but just go by GPH rating.

Those aren't too wonderful. Not only do people tell me all the time how they hate the Fluval and Marineland filters, they always tell me that Whisper and TechnoFlo are the ones they have had the best luck with. Trust me, I work at PSP and we never get returns on Technoflo or Whisper filters, or Aqueon or Imagine, either. Mostly Marineland and Hagen products.
gee I have 4 filters running, there all pretty quiet. just make sure the water line is high and no splashing. I am very happy with my wispers and my bio wheel.

I have a emperor 400 & a aquaclear 30 in the living room, emperor is fairly quiet and the aquaclear is almost silent in the living room. BUt when I try to put the aquaclear 30 in my bedroom last night, agaisnt the silent of the night, it becomes very noisy...(nosier than my running computer...but then my computer is close to silent..)
Is the Red Sea Deco Art filter quiet? I have heard it is not very efficient, but then I don't think I need much filtration for such a small lightly stocked tank. Anyone have experience with that?
An Internal filter looks kinda big & weird in a 3g tank...

The Red Sea filter is loud and doesn't do that well at filtering. I found that it is also hard to maintain.

problem with internal filter is they take up take space and 3 gal isnt much. you really dont have much options. i would just go with a sponge filter.
