Well everyone, I have joined this reef club...everyone there is recommending I start my tank over. I had talked about the Live rock I still need to get which led into other topics like live sand and I told them that I wasn't sure what my substrate is, I know it's not live sand, but anyway in the end they are recommending I take the Damsel to the lfs and just get some live sand take out the substrate out, get the live rock I need and pretty much do the tank like I would of if I had got just the tank.

Anyway I believe this is what I am going to do, I have my light coming soon, will start my sump and get the things I need as I go. Does this sound like a good idea to ya'll??

BTW, I get to go to the very first meeting of this club (it is new) in Feb...exciting!!!!:grinyes:

That isn't a bad idea. Are they suggesting barebottom or just new substrate?

New Substrate, starting out with live sand.

There isnt such a thing as bagged LS. The bacteria cant survive so therefor its dead sand that will eventually become live after being seeded by LR.

Thats not exactly true. There is bacteria available in the bagged live sand, however, the ammounts that is actually in there is not usually the levels which are stated on the bag..Hence why people dont suggest paying extra to buy it..

Thanks

Niko

So are you saying it is pointless to buy it?? I figured a bag of it and then more aroagamite (MS) sand with it???

My opinion is to just go with regular old aragonite. Save the money for something else. The price difference from the 2 are nuts and the price for "live" is not worth it at all, IMO

So most do agree just the aragonite is best? I would love to save the extra money as there is alot of stuff I still need...so any corners that can safely be cut, OH YEAH I'm for it!!

If you are using live rock then the bacteria and other organisms in the live rock will seed the sand bed. I only recommend live sand when someone is starting a tank with all base rock, to start a bacteria line. Other than that I haven't seen any advantage to live sand for the cost.
