Would like to get some suggestions on the best cure for fish with cotton mouth. So far i found

"Make a solution of Terramycin or Aureomycuin by dissolving 50mg per gallon of water, a rapid cure is expected within 48 hours."
and
"The most common remedy is the popular Methylene blue solution. Sick fishes should be placed in a jar, bucket or a treatment tank into which has been added a methylene per blue to colour the water deep blue."

I think cotton mouth is columnaris disease. If that's what your fish has I'd isolate, it's highly contageous. I've dealt with it before and lost a whole tank of fish and tried everything. I think what's most often recommended is Maracyn 1 and 2.

If you're treating the 10 gallon it shouldn't be too expensive and I'd treat the whole tank still isolating the sick fish. I was treating a 25 gal. and lowered the water level to where the filter still worked but I was treating less water. Add an airstone and lower your water temp. The bacteria re-produce quicker in warm water.

Research columnaris disease with pics to make sure this is what you're dealing with.

:iagree:

I had always suggested lowering the temp for bacterial infections. I had observed before columnaris progresses quicker in warm temp prompting me to lower the water temp.

maracyn 1 and 2 used together or independently? Will this have any effect on plants?

k so im a few places they suggest Kanamycin, Erythromycin, Tetracycline
does the local fish store sell these?? how much would they run for? any particular brand/name i should be looking for?
I don't think lfs carry those meds. Look into your livestock stores. Tetracycline is also terramycin if I am not mistaken.

maracyn 1 is erytromycin and maracyn 2 is minocyclin ( a form of tetracylin which doesnt cause light hypersensitivity). they are readily available at any lfs. they should be used to gether to knock out gram positive and gram negative bacteria. i have used them repeatedly with no ill effects on my plants or shrimp.
