How do i know if i got this thing doing what its supposed to be doing? I have had the tank for a few months now, I should have gotten this going earlier but never seen the point until my nitrates got all funky. Anyway hw do i know if i have adjusted right?

The super skimmer takes a bit of a learning curve... It should have come with instructions with pictures that will help. I just set it so I can see a small clump of dirty bubbles being pushed toward the top (it usually goes up and down a bit, then will eventually overflow). I try to set it early in the day, and then later on I'll check to see how much skimmate has collected. I try to set it so I need to clean the cup every 3 days or so. As it gets dirty, you may need to increase the water level a bit - but you should make these adjustments VERY small. I find that applying the slightest amount of pressure on the water level knob makes a difference.

:iagree:
My CSS 225 is the same way. It works pretty well, but the slightest adjustment makes a big difference. I also have found that the little vent in the collection cup lid will plug easily after a few days of skimmming and needs to be cleaned out in order to keep it working efficiently.

I would expect that you'll see it overflow into the cup within 5 minutes of having it set properly. You probably won't see a layer of skimmate on the bottom of the cup for a few hours, though. It's pretty gradual.

Yes, the CSS is a bit of a pain, but it's not that bad when you get the hang of it. I've never known anything different! It consistently pulls dark green gunk out of my water, though!
