Hello everyone. Today I went to the LFS to get salt and finally they've got some really cool tonga branch in stock. So I got my QT setup tonight to bring home new LR tomorrow. LFS said it is cured but better to be safe then sorry. The LR didn't smell bad at store but had lots of die-off, when the guy picked it up awhole bunch of stuff came off as he shook it. So was wondering....how long should I QT it? Do I just let the LR cycle in the QT and wait till no readings on ammo and nitrites???? or just by smell????
 
You just setup your tank? In that case, place the LR in the tank and it will help to cycle your new tank :)

That stuff that shakes off the lr is normal once you got rock in your tank you'll have the same junk just settles on you rock after awhile
 
I should have mentioned that I already have 30lbs of LR inside my display tank and adding to it. I want to let the new rock cure, which i got today. One 8lb rock and 4lbs of branch. It will bring my 30gal to 42lbs LR and fill some empty spaces in my plie. The LFS said to leave in QT for 2 weeks. I was thinking to let the QT go through a cycle with the LR and after the cycle adding the LR to my display. What has everyone else done when adding more LR to their display tanks?
 
Your QT is to begin its cycle, and placing this new LR will help you in that in cycling your tank. Not listen to your LFS on everything if you want to be a far better hobbyist. At least, not listen to the person in this lfs telling you this stuff. Also, if your tanks was all done in its cycling, you can as well use a rubbermaid to cure your new LR. Using only a powerhead and air pump/ with an air stone.

Thats exectly what I was doing with the LR but only in the QT. Got a powerhead and heater inside. How long do you think it will take to cure? I've read you can tell by smell, only the LR doesn't smell like anything right now. So I though that one way to tell its done curing is after its been through a cycle. Am I correct in thinking this? I read its bad to put new LR inside your display cause it might cause a spike in the readings and I don't want to hurt my clowns, hermits and corals.....so I'm QTing it. But when is it okay to place inside my display?????????
 
Actually animal you'll be able to tell by the tests. 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and whatever nitrates. I wouldn't just go by your sense of smell.
