Val issues

any reason not to use weights until the roots take hold? I also have vals that are going to be planted this week, there floating still. I ordered weights to keep them down until the roots take hold .

What does a weight have to do with the root rotting? How would it ever take hold if it is left floating? I have no other choice with the sand it seems, they just don't want to stay put. Or maybe you mean that they should be left floating until they develop proper roots. Perhaps I'll check the root growth now that they've been in there a few weeks to see how they will do without being tied to a rock.

for the little sprouts....should you wait until they break away from the parent or can you clip them to seperate? have quite a few runners and all are still attached.

The problem with using weights is it's easy to damage the plant at the critical crown region or smush leaves &/or roots. Just be very careful. I prefer a small rock, easy to blend in or remove.

Floating doesn't work as well for me. They get stuck on or sucked up by the filter & nibbled on by fish.

I just replanted mine what seemed like a few million times until they took hold. Now I've practically got the stuff growing out of my ears! Even in my goldfish tank, which has just over 0.5wpg and no ferts or CO2, they do well (although grow slower than in my big tank).

As for the plantlets, I don't snip them off until they've got their own root system.

i never worrried about root ball or crown placement, i just shoved them into my substrate and planted like normal... worked great for me. i used to have a row of vals that would put out 2 plants each per week, and grow an average of 2 inches or more per DAY.
