i bought a 54 gal rubbermaid container yesterday. for the water movement, is there difference between an airstone vs powerhead?

Yes there is...All an airstone will do is oxygenate the water, where as a powerhead with effectivly circulate the water, which is what we require mainly in SW systems...circulation....

I think nycsicktank is refering to storing SW for storage. In another thread I stated how I use a powerhead in each of my 32g trashcans that I use to store NSW.

Honestly, I don't know if it does make that much of a difference using an airstone vs powerhead in a water storage container. All I know is you want the water to be moving a little.. an airstone may be enough to do that. I am not possitive though so if others could chime in with their opinions that would be cool.

A powerhead that is carefully aimed as to disturb the water-air interface on the surface will result in much higher oxygen levels than a simple airstone alone. Of course, that depends upon the ambient oxygen and CO2 levels in your house or wheverever you are keeping the mixing container.

Either way for me, whether its a tank or storage container, powerheads all the way...I just dont see how you can get any ammount of worthy flow from an airstone...

:iagree:
and for the price! You can buy a decent little powerhead that will move 100gph
for $10.00, whereas with an airstone - you have the pump, airline tubing, and an airstone that won't stay at the bottom of your "storage" container unless you weigh it down somehow. Powerheads come with suction cups you can suck onto the sides or they're heavy enough to just rest on the bottom.
