Here is a simple one,How often do you Feed Your Fish

I just started to feed my tanks twice a day (used to be 2.5 times a day). Even with twice a day, my danio tank goes crazy for the food and the ghost shrimps get very little.

Is it better to make 2 small feeding rounds per day vs 1 med-large feeding round per day?
Why do people let their fishes fast a day of the week?

I can only speak to my thinking.

In the wild fish can go several days without finding food and who knows what all benefits are derived therefrom.

Hence every week or so my fish fast for a day or two.

The converse is that if you just keep feeding your fish every 15 minutes they will not stop eating until they are gorged and this emulates nature also as in the wild a fish does not know when it's next meal will be available.

Hence every month or so my fish get to gorge themselves about 2/3 of the way.

wow after reading all the post i have come to the realization that im overfeeding my fish currently i have been feeding them 3 times a day usually at 10am 3pm and 8pm about as much as the five fish can eat in 2 minutes. but the back of my tetramin tropical flake food says 3 times a day is this just to sell more food? or may-b based on having more fish?

Marx: Two Items

You are necessarily overfeeding.

If you have 0 ammonia and nitrite concentrations in your tank water and if you do not have algae growing on the tank walls then, IMHO, you are not overfeeding.


Flakes are OK as a staple but your fish will very much enjoy an occasional feeding of frozen brine shrimp, frozen blood worms, live red wiggler worms and home made recipes.

My staple is home made recipes along with daily feeding of flakes and occasional feeding of the other foods cited above.

I feed my adult Discus twice a day, and my juveniles depending on size between 4 - 10 times a day. The community tanks twice a day but I do the appropriate WC's a vacc the accomodate this feeding regime.

I feed 6 days a week in the morning about a half hour after lights go on, and fast on sat or sun. Sometimes I will give them something as a treat at night.
