Any know why this happens??

I know it will melt Vals.

Try dosing at half strength.

My guess would be the same reason it kills some algae. There is small amount of algaecide in Excel and Vals and mosses seem to be susceptible to as well. Like slappy said in smaller doses will work.

Something is wrong here.

I am currently dosing once a week with Excel and once a week with an Excel, Flourish, Seachem iron solution (as well as Flourish) and my spirals are really growing .

My tank is a jungle--Lots of Vals, swords, ect. Have not had algae problems in tank for a while, but 2 weeks ago pressure in my CO2 tank was low and was not getting putting CO2 into tank. Got some algae all over tank (CO2 back up and running now). Decided to dose some excel to hurry the death of algae. Was dosing Excel everyday. Most of my val melted. I do not dose Excel regularly, just for this problem.
Not a big disaster, I had too much val anyway. After taking out the melted vals the tanks accually looks better, more open swimming room.

You are not dosing at full strength.. excel is meant to be used every second day not once a week :)
