Enlighten me about water.....

I have it in the back of my head that "purified" and "distilled" water (the kind sold in one-gallon jugs in the grocery store) is not the same as water treated by reverse osmosis. Correct? If so, what's the difference?

(FTR, since LA water is so hard, I plan to cut it with RO water for the Betta Palace, since most of the plants I like like softer water.)

as for LA water..... my plants are fine. i wouldnt worry about using ro.

That's reassuring. Most plant books I've read said few plants do well in hard water.

Do you have much of a problem with mineral buildup around the tank rims?
