I went to restaurant and there was a huge, lively and feisty crowntail betta in a bowl which couldn't have been more then one gal.
I would never keep my bettas in such cramped quarters and yet here was this betta thriving/
The bowl was well decorated with stones and small plants.
I asked about the betta and was told they had him for one year.
How?.
Even more weird...open top and the betta could have easily leaped out.

In the meantime my betta living in ten gal by himself comes down with finrot and he's not even a year old yet. :rant2:

sometimes there are exceptions to the rule, what you saw was one of the one out of a thousand bettas that happens to be healthy and kept in a small tank.

Yeah, I try to keep my Bettas in tanks larger than two gallons. Though my newest Betta is a lazy SOB and would probably be fine in a small cup the rest of his life.

As long as they keep up with water changes every other day I can't imagine the fish dying for any reason besides boredom. I know people who have their betta in a Vase with one of those peace lilly plants in it. Though they do feed him and change his water regularly, he does not have a heater which is probably why is he a couple years old.

My betta is in a 1g bowl and is very happy, no cooties, huge bubble nest, ect.

I feed Hikari foods and some frozens.
I also change all the water out each Sun. and use Prime.
lol he doesnt need to jump outta my bowl.

They come from low o2 rice paddies, stagnant water and they jump puddle to puddle in search of a female and vice versa.

wow, i had that myth. BETTAS DO NOT LIVE IN PUDDLES they live in bogs, marshes, rice paddies etc even a small pond or marsh would have hundreds to thousands of gallons of water in it.

two words, commonly misconstrued as having the same meaning.

LIVING ≠THRIVING.

That's the thing...I do know there's a difference between surviving and thriving.
I would have expected a betta in these conditions to be small and maybe laying listless on the bottom at times.

Instead this betta was up and flaring at me when I checked. The conditions did look good with the exception of the size of the bowl.

Even if he appeared healthy, he probably is still uncomfortable in a tank that small, although it sounds like in all other aspects he was being treated perfectly.

That you, I was looking for links like yours, but got side tracked! :)

in all reality, that fish could have been in perfect health, given proper care was taken of the smaller container.. it is very possible. that still doesnt define thriving though.
