ok now let me first off say this tank will be low end brackish but i posted here because its more active and these fish can live in fresh although thrive in brackish....

so this is a 30g extra high-

8 mollies
2 figure 8 puffers

any suggestions as to other "better" options. i definitely want 1 figure 8 and was told although it was a weird size tank, 2 should do well.

(and i know of the "risk" of puffers munching other fish but i also know of them doing well with tankmates)

i'd only got w/ one f8, less likely to have aggression issues.

and how many livebearers with it (say hypothetically they were all platies)

I always thought livebearers don't really mix well with salt in their tank...
In any case, puffers will start nipping once your livebearers start popping babies.

The topic however still leans on brackish water so it cannot stay in freshwater forums. I'm sorry if this is inconvenient to you. Besides brackish water forums is the best place for this topic considering plenty of people who keep brackish water tanks also visit this place, not just freshwater forums.

Good luck.:)

Mollies can tolerate freshwater, brackish and saltwater conditions provided in freshwater environment, water is not soft and acidic which they lack tolerance for. Mollies are the only exception among the popular livebearers as far as I can remember. The rest will not do well in high saline waters long-term.

Mollies ARE BW fish! I have a 29g with 2 F8s & started out with 3 pairs of mollies for algae control. Although the puffers ate all but 1-2 adult mollies, the others have propogated to a nice colony of different colors. The puffers cull off the weaker fry but there are still about 8 of them in the tank most of the time. Puffers are well fed, algae is in control (only tank out of 9 with this issue--only BW tank too).

sword do very well with salt in their tanks as well but im not sure if they can handle full marine. platies i hear can do well in brackish

I keep mollies with my GSP, they do well together in a 75gal with bbgs and a mudskipper.

How long did they live in brackish conditions?
