Hi all,

Just wanted to share my sad story...We got an orange diamond goby about a week ago from our usual LFS. The first few days he stirred up tons of sand as gobies do, but soon he settled down and started eating during feeding times. We named him Captain Ron, and he dug his burrow right under the rock where our clowns' anemone is, right in the front of the tank. So we could see him all the time and it was awesome, and our tank looked gorgeous!

This past Sunday we noticed that the front hallway smelled like fish, and sure enough there was Captain Ron on the floor...or what was left to him after the cats played with him. He must have jumped out of the tank...

We had specifically waited until we had a tight fitting lid to buy this fish, since they are known jumpers. We do currently have a HOB filter, so there is a maybe one inch gap across a back quarter of the tank. But the rest of the tank is covered!!! We are just dumbfounded that the little guy found the one TINY place to jump out of!!! And we are pretty sad as well...he was definitely cool. So I guess we won't get another one until we find a way to cover that space up.

Sorry for your loss. I too find it amazing how fish always find that little space to jump through. I've had it happen numerous times when I think there's no way they could jump through there.

aww man that stinks. im kind of in the same boat as you as i just bought one yesterday!!! i havent named him yet, but if youd like....ill name him in memory of captain ron lol. i have some large openings in my tank right now and im using some plexi glass to cover up my holes. that might be a smart idea for you to do

You know.. When I had my first tank I had a cat that was the instigator of quite a few things... Are you sure nobody went fishing?

I am very sorry for your loss, but I know that mine could have figured out how to use a can opener if I had left it out...

Thanks for all the kind words!

There's really no way for me to be absolutely sure the cats didn't go fishing, but I highly doubt it. One of them is too fat to get on top of the tank, and the other one isn't smart enough to sit there and wait. Plus the tank is fairlydeep, and Captain always stayed on the bottom...If the cats had been fishing I bet I would have lost someone else by now!

We are going to cover that space up with a screen of some sort, for sure.
