I had the same trouble with my gold nugget plec. Was given the advice to raise the temp to 81f and smear a bit of cucumber with garlic. Took 3 or 4 nites but patience did pay in the end. Depending on what they were fed before you bought them, it might take them a little while to discover the zucchini is actually food. The garlic helps to stimulate their appetite and makes it easier to locate food. Good luck with your feeding.

i'll give that a try. i think maybe he just doesn't realize its food yet. he eats the wood. he is making sure he gives me something to vacuum when i do water changes. today he actually came out of the cave for a second till the oscar startled him back into his cave. maybe i'm just being impatient.
Garlic works very well. A really overkill pleco treat is you could try is zuchini, studded in shrimp pellets, soaked in garlic essence before going in the tank. Sink it after lights out so the oscar might give the mellon a chance.
I agree with the above, what else is in there? Intimidation could be a very big factor.
So is age. What size is he? The older the bolder with a lot of pleco species. Often panaques don't really start making an appearance untill they hit four or five inches.

now on a positive note the cucumber appeared to be knawed on a bit. i weighted it down by sticking a metal lobster pick in it. that fell out and the cuccumber was floating but looked to be messed with. just don't know if it was the oscar or not. i'm at a disadvantage with him being nocturnal and the tank being at my office.
garlic essence, is that something i can get at a local grocery store? is it something to just soak the cucc in?
