Got some new Rainbows today....

i was going to buy some the other day ( bosemani ) but they where wild caught full grown,40 bucks!! so i was like ya.. gonna wait a bit LOL
If anyone ever tells you that a boesemani is "wild caught" and their name is not Heiko Bleher or Gerald Allen, they are either lying to you or they got lied to by the distributer. These guys are only found in a couple of remote lakes deep in the jungles of PNG. I'd bet that the number of times they've been collected in the wild since they were discovered is less than a dozen in total. Nobody sells the wild caught stock, they are always used as breeding stock. It's too difficult to collect them and they're WAY too easy to breed. If you have a mature group of just a few breeders, know what you're doing, and have breeding ponds or enough tub space, you can produce several hundred fry each week.
The coloration is definitely genetic. Some are yellow, others are orange. Lots of things will enhance colors, but I haven't seen anything that will change a boesemani from yellow to orange or vice versa.

I...want....neon rainbows!!Must..get..them!!!! :D Stock levels will be increasing then. X_X Ayee I wish I have a larger tank now. I'm rooting for 100 gallons or something for my future tank. I'm still with my 55 Gallon when I just bought it 2 months ago and feel like going for bigger already. Spendin too much for fish lol

I absolutely LOVE these fish! i a have an empty 30g right now...how big to the bosemani get? would a thirty be big enough for a few of these?

Rainbows are very active swimmers. I think a 30 might be too small for them.

Great! I have a bosemani and a couple of turquoise rainbows. Had a HUGE red one, but it died a while back after a nice long life and they red ones are hard to come by in my area. I recommend them to people wanting a peaceful fish with lots of good color. Quality water makes them even more brilliant.

Good find!

Are you in MI? If so, I think those are my fish. I traded them in last week-ish because of my impending move to ND.

I had them a couple years now - grew them out since they were 1.5" or so. I fed them mostly NLS and veggie flake with the occasional frozen bloodworms once a week or so. Enjoy them!

I have one Rainbow in a 29gallon and he is fine. But yes, more would be pushing it.

He'd be great rather than fine if he were in a bigger tank with some buddies. What species do you have? If you have a neon dwarf rainbow (M. praecox) you can probably have a school of five in a 30 gallon, but if it's a boesemani, turquoise, irian, etc. it would be best to have a school of at least 5 in at least a 55 gallon, 4ft. tank. One rainbow won't show it's best color or display unless it has some rainbowfish buddies to show off to, and having a school will also be less stressful for a rainbowfish.
