the marine guys day off.....

so you see a coral for $50 and the guy at the till rings it up at $25,

do you

pay the price and laugh all the way to the car or tell them the real price and pay the $50?

be honest people, everyone i know with marine tanks walks around that shop oohhhin and ahhhin cos its all so expensive

If the prices are too expensive, either find another store that sells the stuff cheaper, or find a different hobby. A mistake in your favor is one thing, but to deceive an employee who is forced into a position he isn't trained for because someone is out is plain and simple theft.

Well, I have a similar story but I chose to be honest about it. My favorite LFS manager had a falling out with the owner, a silent partner. So my LFS guy quit.. moved on to open his own store. Well, the owner now had a store full of fish/corals and no clue how to run it because he was a construction worker that just bankrolled the store. So he throws his son in charge of the store.. a bricklayer by trade.

First day I walk in there when the big change happened. There are no prices on anything and the store was a mess. There were a couple things I wanted though so I asked about prices.. the guy didn't have a clue so he just tells me to make him an offer. I informed him that the "wholesale" price sheet was behind the counter because I didn't feel like being a thief. (years of visiting this LFS you get to know a few things). He thanked me, and sold me every item I wanted at his cost just because I was honest and helped him out on his first day on the job. Some of the items he said I could have gotten a lot less than wholesale if I just gave him a price.. but in the end, I saved 90% off the cost of everything. That is what this LFS marked things up.. Now I won't visit that store again because it has been run right into the ground due to lack of knowledge/experience .. just happened to be one of those right place at right time things.

Frankly if that happened I'd say "Is there a sale?". I know I'd say that because it has happened before, and guess what? I went back and bought more coral. Sorry Tidy but asking us to be honest is a bit ironic.

I would be honest and I was. I went in one day to get a molly miller blenny. The girl had marine fish but we were takling and she wasn't paying attention. I got home and had a chalk bass. I called in and said what had happened and i'd be in to pay the extra because I like the fish and would keep it. It was only $10. Sure I could have played dumb, but it's dishonest.

PetCo employee once tried to sell me a black and white clownfish that was put into the computer wrong and it came up for $5 instead of $39. I told them about it, and the price was corrected. If it's something I didn't notice at all then obviously I'm not going to say somethng, but I can't just steal knowingly from a store.

I don't want this to be a cheap hobby. If it were cheap, there would be nothing left in the oceans.

Got to agree with the others. I went to my LFS once to buy some Epoxy. There wasn't a price on the box and the young lad who was fairly new didn't know how much to charge me. the next time I went in I asked the owner how much it was and paid him.

I know how much my LFS charges people to set up their tanks. He has spent a total of 9 days at my house sorting out my tanks and not once has he charged me for his time. Guess I owe him.

I believe for me it is a question of ethics. I can't and won't knowingly take advantage of someone else...LFS or fellow reefer. It is your reputation at stake and as Corny as that may sound it is the one thing that can't be taken from you and you should not be so willing to give it away. As noted earlier...if the price is fair than you have the option to buy...if it isn't go somewhere else or wait for the sale. At some point in our lives we all hope that if we make a mistake the other person will have the decency to point it out (we all help one another). Sorry for the babble, but this is a strong point with me. It is the basic premise of "Do unto others" and no I am not getting religious.

thieving is stickin em in my wifes handbag and walking out.............
if i was inexperienced, i wouldnt of known the difference....however i DID, and i took advantage....and HA, best trip there EVER!

How is that so different? With one you are cheating someone out on money by not paying for it when you know you should be and taking advantage of someone's lack of security system. The other you are cheating someone out on money by not paying as much as you know you should be and taking advantage of someone's lack of knowledge. I suppose I just dont really see that much of a difference...
But I guess we cant all be at least a little ethical...

on the flip side of things. i had a low grade flower horn that was out growing my tank so i went to the lfs. And he said the flowerhorn was not worth much about 30 euro but wood not give cash but i could swop for fish of the same amount of money so i did .i went back about two weeks later he was selling that flowerhorn for 170 euro i felt like a right fool

their wholesale price probably wouldnt be much more than that. Or perhaps the person then saw the fish in some light and saw that it was nicer than originally expected. Either way, if they are selling it for 170, it would be rediculous to think that they would give you 170 for it. Fish like that are pretty much always available. SO why would they take someone else's fish that could possibly be carrying some disease if they werent going to make any money off of it? I do think that price is awfully high, especially for the amount of money he gave you, but still, to make it a wholesale price, he wouldnt have to give you much more, if any. *shrug*
