Just wondering if I have too many fish in my tank or if I am ok.

29 Gal tank
Aquaclear 50 filter
~40% Water changes once per week
Live plants

5 Tetras (dont remember the kind)
5 cherry barbs
1 Dalmation Molly
1 Blue Paradise
1 Rainbow Shark
5 panda cory
5 ottos
5 plecos
1 small crab (I forget what kind)

I'm no expert but your probably going to get flak for having that Rainbow shark in there...

What kind of Plecos are those that you mentioned... if they are common plecos they will get to be VERY large, up to 24 inches I believe

Other than that I think its ok... but like I said, I'm no expert.

Help me understand why the rainbow shark is not a good fit.

What kind of plecos? The species will determine how many you should keep. If they're commons, take them all back.

You might want to lay off the otos a bit, maybe take 1 back?

How big is the rainbow shark? Is it agressive (yet)?

The crab has to go... All of the common "freshwater" crabs sold (red claw, fiddler, etc) need brackish or saltwater to thrive, and a large land area.

The rainbow WILL become to agressive for your tank in it's adulthood.

Can you post pic's of your pleco's? Most pleco's will grow way to large for a 29g tank.

I agree that the crab has to go.

i will post some pix later tonight.

i just did a search and i think i am wrong and that they are not plecos - but i cant remember what they are. they are another algae eater that the aquarium guys said would work well with the ottos. next time i am at the store i will look them up.

the rainbow shark is about 3 inches long and does chase other fish around occasionally, but there is lots of cover for them to hide.

i am planning on starting up a 55 gal tank in a couple months. should i move the rainbow shark to that tank and get fish that are more compatible?

Just did another search and found some pictures of algae eaters (link). I think the ones I was calling plecos are actually Siamese Algae Eaters
.

Siamese algae eaters = good

chinese algae eaters = bad

however, that's a whole lot of algae eaters for one 29g tank. while they will be peaceful towards each other, you'll have to make sure that they are all getting enough to eat. are they getting prepared foods and/or vegetables in addition to whatever algae is in the tank?
