Large tanks and water changes....

So, with these larger tanks and lightly to moderately stocked....can one push out water changes a little less frequently?

:) The frequency & amount of your W/C's will depend mostly on the stock you choose & how fast your nitrate levels rise & how much water it takes to bring it back down to a safe 10/20ppm. "T"

I understand the problem. I'm lucky now; our well putrs out crazy water, I could let the hose run for days without drying it up. When I was a kid though, our well sucked at one house I lived in. During the summer, you couldn't do 2 loads of laundry in a 24 hour period if you wanted to take a shower that day - the well would run dry pretty easily if we weren't careful. You'll just have to find out a little information about your water supply as stated. The other thing you might be able to do if its a serious problem is run a trickle into a holding tank for water changes so you take out the water slowly, rather than a large quantity at once.

along those lines you could also get some rain barrels. as long as your roof isn't made of anything toxic it'll be fine for the fish, and you can also use it for watering plants, washing cars, etc. . . another way to reduce the pressure on your well.

i like that idea....not sure though that the shingles on the roof would lead to good water quality. ;o)

I'll probably just fill a 55g drum up a little bit each day to be safe.

if i were a normal deep well, i really wouldn't worry about it. it is an old bored well maybe about 70-80' down. gets murky when we get a ton of rain.
