on SW fish and FW fish?

My friend and i had this argument, and he believes the MOST any tank SW fish will live is 5 years. I dont have a FW tank, but hes trying to convinve me to get into it, with one of his suggestions being fresh water fish live longer. I've had some fish for 3 years already in my tank, and they came from other tanks already good sizes.

Never mind how long they live - you'd' have to enjoy the hobby and the fish. I have both because I love having a planted aquarium (FW) but love my SW for other things. If you aren't interested - don't worry about the life span.

It all depends on the type of fish and the environment you keep them in. For example a cleaner wrasse does not fare well in captivity and most die within months. On the hand a clown fish, living in good water conditions, tankmates, tank size etc can last 10+ yrs.

one of my clowns is 5 years old, and so is my yellow tang. my cleaner wresse is 4 years old. i found that very small fish lives the least amount of time, like 2years or so. but as far as many larger fish go, i think they can live pretty good amount of time, if they don't die before they get old of cause.

it depends mostly on the species. the fancy ones from tonga fare to frozen food MUCH easier than the standard ones. But every once in a while, you will find a normal one that eats find and does well.
and it does depend on the fish. some like a pygmy angel will only live a year or two, but as said, clownfish can live way longer. Longer than 10 years even. For the most part, just about all of your fish if healthy and if they die of old age and not something else, are likely to live much longer than you will have a tank.
