would the two different color varieties of khuli loaches shoal together? right now i have three black khuli loaches, and i was thinking of expanding the group. i like the way the banded ones look, too, but i want the group to benefit from the expansion rather than just adding more loaches to the tank since they do better in bigger groups.

here's the setup, since you'll probably ask:

29 gallon

1 male convict cichlid, fairly docile

school of 5 tiger barbs

3 black khuli loaches

1 bristlenose pleco

i know the tank is fully stocked as it is, but the khuli loaches and pleco stay out of sight most often, so rather than amount of space, it's an issue of maintenance, right?

i run an emperor 400 and do weekly water changes of about 30%.

i want what's best for the fish, so i'm up for not adding the extra loaches. the tank has been stocked this way for about 6 months, no problem, and test readings are always stable.

i just love the little guys! seeing them come out during feeding time and squiggling around is one of the highlights of the tank.

anyways, i would still like to know if the two color varieties will school out of sheer curiosity and for future information in case it's not a good idea to add to this tank.

thanks for the replies!

Personally, I wouldn't think of trying it with a convict and a school of tiger barbs in there... Looks pretty well stocked to me anyway.

well, i already have the three black khulies in there right now, and i haven't ever seen any agressive behavior from either jack or the barbs.

this is not to say it won't happen, i suppose... but the barbs and the convict keep themselves pretty busy with each other.

so what do you think about the two color varieties schooling together?

i think you're right... the tank is stocked well enough... i just have to fight my urges to buy more fish and just buy more tanks first! hehe.

Yes, same fish but different species. Black ones are Pangio oblonga. Striped ones are most likely Pangio kuhlii, Pangio semicincta, Pangio myersi, etc mixed altogether.

They don't shoal but will get along well.

thats what i ment
