Hi there, new to the site, looks like a great place to get info and trade ideas. I've been in the hobby for quite a long time and have a problem realy pretty new for me. My main tank for many years has been a 55 gal tank, keeping fresh water fish. Neons and glowlight tetras, Opaline gouramis, Green swordtails, and black skirt tetras. I also have a couple of small plecs, gold nuggets I think, they stay small about 4". I have a new 29 gal tank too. In both tanks I have severe die offs of only my neons. All the other fish seem fine. Ammonia levels are good, water quality otherwise seems good and I do routine water changes about every 10 days or so. I've tried getting neons from several different sources, but not matter where I get them, within a week I lose them all. Usually starting about a week after I get them is when the die off starts. Any ideas?

Hiya! Those sound like great tanks! In addition to the water parameters, what type of filters are you running? What are the symptoms / signs post-mortem?

off the top of my head, don't remember what the exact levels were, but were with in the levels for neons, ph was neutral. Before the neons would die, they would start to swim funny or just float in the middle of the tank on their side or pointed straight up. Typically I would find them dead stuck to the filter in let of lodged in a plant, no signs of ick or any type of parasite. I have a tetra wisper on both tanks.

There's only one level acceptable in a cycled tank ammonia/nitrItes should both be 0.0ppm

So this is happening to ONLY your neons? Both new and old fish?

Just before this started, what was the recent addition? Neons?

Have looked into Neon Tetra Disease?
http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/disease/neon.php

Very contageous, very deadly, and the symptoms are quite varied, but include Color loss. Swimming disorders and in severe cases even spinal distortions...

Tested again, ammonia and nitrates were both zero in both the 55 gal and the 29 gal. both tanks were new additions of the neons. in the 29 addition of both neons and glowlites. Only the neons were affected.

NitrAtes or NitrItes?

Nitrites.
and I acclimate them for about 70-80 minutes
15 in bag for temp, and a half cup every 10 minutes or so.
I use a net to take the fish out of the bag and dispose of the water from the bag.

FYI, I use a API master test kit for the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. I do get the two nitrates and nitrites mixed up. When I'm actually doing the test though I know the ammonia is zero and which ever the ammonia is broken down into reads zero as well.
