Anyone notice? I was told by a PetCo employee tonight that the corporation will discontinue carrying all saltwater livestock, birds (except keets and tiels), reptiles, and some small animals as of today, Tuesday, April 1st. Just thought I'd spread the word.

I noticed that the petco near my place was under staff and their selections were very little to none and the ones that ARE in the tank dont look very well. I did notice that their saltwater section were mostly empty tanks

odd mine is doing fine, but they don't sell birds here....but in there reef tanks there selling macro algea...thats odd, i goto petco all the time for misc. crap to pick up they never hinted at shutting down there saltwater stuff actually there getting alot of new livestock....

Apparently it was a pretty sudden decision. I was told that it was something being enacted on a national level, and I have confirmed this with a few other pet parents on some other message boards.

theres three petcos near me, one on the southside which there saltwater has always been limited they only have 3 tanks or so but it's in the bad part of town...the other one is nice but they don't have much just fish. but the one i goto has a reef tank and they say that only some petcos that have good sales get to have a reef tank...thats really weird i was just there two days ago getting more lr...

don't get me wrong, i don't like the way death-co conducts buisness but i'll be pissed off cause i think they have the best live rock at 7 bucks a pound with the most hitchhickers and cheap frags! their fish are maintained badly(i'd definiatly goto one of lfs to buy livestock) but the reef tank is maintaned very well...ugh i hope your lying!!

I don't know. An entire corporation going to such a costly extent to play a joke is a bit far-fetched.

Here's a post from another forum that I visit:

I work at Petco. Yes this is a corporate decision and will take effect tomorrow (TUE). Half of reptiles will be gone, all birds except parakeets and cockatiels, 2 towers (most petcos have 4 towers) of small animals, and salt water fish. They will still be carrying all small animals (guinea pigs, mice, ferrets, hamsters, dwarf hamsters, rats, gerbils) except they will only be one sex (minus ferrets who are neudered anyway).

The reason for getting rid of salt water is due to shrink. A lot of salt water fish get brought to us already sick, don't fare well in the tanks due to rough transport, and die. The decreasing of small animals and only having one sex is because we get a lot of small animals in that our suppliers mix their sexes up and they are pregnant, we have to put them in the back, then they have babies, and it's just happening too often. The decrease in general is because we just don't sell that many small animals. My store for example, will have guinea pigs for a very long time. People only seem to buy babies, and when they get full grown, they don't want to buy them, and they are stuck at our store for a long time. So now we will only have two towers, one sex, and if nobody buys them they will be there until they are sold. Same thing with reptiles.

I'm sure another reason they are cutting them down is due to the vet costs. Petco hasn't been having as much profit and doesn't want to spend that much money on vet bills anymore. This isn't saying we won't take any animals to the vet anymore, we will and are. It's just common sense, the less animals, the less vet bills.

The only birds that Petco really sells regulary are Parakeets, and more than others, cockatiels. We will have Conures, etc in our store for months upon months (sometimes over a year). So that is why they are cutting birds.

I for one am glad, just getting closer and closer to selling no animals. I know they are doing this just for profits, but the people who work for petco have seen this for the past years and they are finally doing something about it.
