I am thinking about getting a leopard gecko as a pet

I have had him since he was 18 months old. I rescued him from a pet shop that were not looking after him correctly. :wall:

That pic was taken about 3 month ago. He has always had that problem since I got him but I found soaking his feet in warm water then gently peeling the skin off has never caused him any harm & he has never lost a toe. :)

How's the humid hide? Shouldn't be a problem if the humid hide stays moist.

It stressed him out too much when he was younger to keep spraying the vivarium. He hadn't even been handled when I first got him and he acted like he was crossed with a pitbull and used to bite me all the time.So to get him used to being handled and to help with the skin on his toes I have always done it that way.

He seems to enjoy a warm bath too. :)
 
So you don't have a humid hide at all? I guess thats fine if you like taking the extra work in getting the stuck shed off.

Not all geckos will use a humid hide. The only geckos that have been in humid hides for me are gravid females, otherwise they all stay clear. I usually offer a humid hide to any new gecko, but if they show no interest after a shed, out it goes. Too much of a hassle and it takes up a bit of space (as I use a rack unit for housing).

Only a 2 of my geckos have shedding problems as well, one who is 5 years old, but I just got her a year ago and she had a lot of issues. She won't even lay eggs in the humid hide half the time either..
 
All 7 of my geckos utilize their humide hides. Just because you don't think they use it, doesn't mean they don't...

Not all geckos will use humid hides though, and a lot of people have had this issue as well. Just because all of yours do doesn't mean everyone elses will. I keep humid hides in 3 of my 5 racks for the females laying. The males have never even bothered with the hides (and I have sat around and watched them for long periods of time). Even when I used to keep them in a large tank the males wanted nothing to do with the humid hides. My juveniles expressed no interest in them either, but they had the chance for the first month or so I owned them. You can usually tell if a gecko is using it, especially when you use vermiculite and moss in them. They tend to drag it in and out when they go in/out. They always make a disaster with it.

That's my issue right now. My new male loves the egg laying hides I have and I constantly have to shoe him out of them so the females can have access to them for egg laying. I'm actually going to put him in his own tank for a little bit so my females can relax.
