Canister Filter for 7gal tank

For anyone else out there that may have been intrigued with this thread, I have done some more research on the minicanisters specifically the Zoo Med 501 on several reptile forums. While they do get okay reviews on average, it has been stated that they can't operate with more head than being level with the tank. That means no hiding under a cabinet. Too bad because I had believed that that was the best way to go for the money. And just looking at them, it looks to me that the 501, mini 80, and others are all built the same but with different hoses and names so I'm guessing they would all work the same.

I'm not sure about what you expect from a itty bitty filter for a very small tank, but the options you have are good options.

Not sure what you mean? I have stated earlier that it is purely esthetics. Because the tank is so small I don't want anything in it (i.e. internal filter). I don't expect anything out of anything. I am simple using this forum full of people for advice on a small canister filter that can be hidden from view. I do appreciate all advice and tip from others but will research those to see if they will work for me.

What is wrong with a HOB? Placed right, with a background on the tank, it is hardly noticeable.

try this

UGF is a horrible option IMO, It will be impossible to get all the dirt out, and if you could see all the dirt I rinsed out from my canister after just 2 weeks, you would agree.

Why is a UGF harder to clean than a canister? IMO, it would be easier. Use a gravel vacuum with each water change. All filters gather dirt, they all need cleaning. How hard is a canister to clean. I have one. It is a pain, as I have to carry it accross the kitchen to the sink, dripping water the whole way, rinse oiut numerous sponges and ceramic media. Refill, set top on again, restart. How is that easier than a UGF?

If the OP doesn't want a UGF than that is cool as well. But other than the up tube, it does leave a very open tank, with simply a pump outside the tank which can easily be hidden.

Actually TKOS, I loved the UG filters in my 55gal I had. I used powerheads to push water up through the rock and it kept the tanks water clean with the addition of vacuum once every other week. The tank I have now is a bow front tank so the bottom plate would have to be cut to fit. Also, I don't like to use UG filters with airstones since they pull material down into the gravel. I would add a powerhead but this tank is just so small that equipment just looks out of place.

petsmart.com has the zoo med 501 filter for sale. here is the link:

after one clicks on the customer review button, there is a slew of reviews about the filter from users. they do not give favorable ratings...

consider that if you go on ebay, the c-160 (marineland's new canister filter- just type in c-160 in the basic search bar) sells for 65 dollars new with ups ground shipping...
