Does this sound about right? I hate the one capful equals x gallon directions when you have to break it down to "per cap thread". I have no clue. So I wrote Seachem and asked about using an eye dropper to dose and about how many drops I would need for a moderate to heavily planted 10 gallon tank. Also, after looking at the ingredients, I inquired about the chlorine and copper as well.

So with adding CO2 to the tank I should also be adding 18-20 drops twice a week?

This was there response:

There are about 20 or 22 drops in 1mL, so I would say you can dose about 18-20 drops for your tank. As for the chlorine and copper content in lourish, it is very minimal and is required to be put onto the Guaranteed Analysis for all fertilizers. Plants use copper; the chlorine is listed because some of the ingredients are a "chloride" in order to be in solution and used by plants (i.e., potassium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, etc.). Flourish and all the other plant products are definitely safe for fish when dosed as directed. You are correct; there are quite a few Flourish products. The Flourish you are using is a comprehensive, broad spectrum plant supplement. Flourish Excel is a liquid carbon source, and Flourish Iron is an iron
supplement. Flourish Nitrogen, Flourish Phosphorus, and Flourish Potassium are all fertilizers for the planted aquarium. Flourish Trace is a trace element supplement for plants. Whether you choose to use any of these other
products is up to you and how well your plants are growing. With people who are just starting out, we usually recommend using our Plant Pack: fundamentals, which contains our Flourish (which you are using), Flourish Iron, and Flourish Excel; this is a great starting point.

Interesting! I wrote them with the same question about drops and using Flourish Excel in my 10g planted tank. (These aging eyes don't play well with the "1 cap thread = 1ml" guideline. :o ) I was planning to pick up either an eyedropper, syringe, or small graduated cylinder tonight.

(The graduated cylinder has a certain appeal, since I could then play mad scientist and laugh maniacally over my tank. )

The reason they say 22 drops per mL for Flourish is probably because it has a slightly lessened surface tension than just regular water. 20 drops to 1 mL is based on water, so different liquids will have different ratios. Most aqueous solutions will be close. Flourish is, of course, and aqueous solution so 21-22 drops sounds about right.

From companies like Cole Parmer and Fisher Scientific you can purchase calibrated disposable pippettes. You have to buy at least 50-100, and they aren't the cheapest thing, but they have tick marks.
