Cycling Question???

My guess is that the live rock has already been cured or isn't going to have much die off so it produces too low of an ammonia spike if at all so the straight ammonia produces the spike most are looking for.

Then wouldnt that meen that the LR already has the beneficial bacteria in it do to the die off has been taken care off by the bacteria in the LR

Good question. I THINK that with cured LR there are some bacteria left over but are deep inside the rock and the bacteria created by the ammonia spike can live on the LR. It should take less time to create the bacteria you need because some exists already in the rock. This is what I think but let's rely on someone with more expensive.

The less dried out the rock, the more bacteria I would imagine it kept and the less of an ammonia spike you would need. Also you might have enough die off with LR that hasn't been dried out to create the spike without adding an extra does of ammonia.

Again, I'm new. Let's hear from some of the experts.

For me, using ammonia on SW tank that is starting off with fully cured live rock, is mearly done as a test, to ensure that the tanks bio system is working correctly...If it is, then the ammonia will soon be gone...

When adding fully cured LR to a tank and then adding ammonia to it what does that do to the life on the rock as in mini brittle's, bristle worms, copo pods, amphi pods and mysid shrimp

Well, as far as i see it, your going to possibly get some die off from the ammonia..However, if your using bacteria laden rock, the ammonia should be converted pretty quickly...new life will sporn, grow....So, i dont have any personal concerns over that issue..

The problem with using ammonia to cycle a tank, is that short of using lab grade ammonia which is hard to get. The ammonias sold in stores are deluted with water. Due to the nature of ammonia killing off bacteria many companys use standard well water for dilution. By doing this they may be introducing other chemicals to the tank.

Does that include products which are sold there as " 100% Pure Ammonia " ?
